Community Foundations make up one of the fastest growing sectors of philanthropy in the United States today. They build and strengthen communities by making it possible for a wide range of donors to create permanent, named funds to meet the needs of the community.

The first community foundation was established in Cleveland in 1914. Today, there are more than 700 community foundations throughout the United States.

The Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland was established in 1997 by a group of 18 Lakeland residents, led by Jack Grady. The CFGL is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization which administers funds established by individuals, corporations, private foundations and non-profits to support the charitable needs of the Lakeland community.

The mission of the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland is to improve the quality of life by providing a vehicle that promotes philanthropy. With the guidance of a strong board, made up of highly respected and responsible community leaders, the Foundation offers support to local non-profit organizations and awards creative grants with the goal of fostering positive change.

But it all begins with you. All it takes is an individual, with an instinct for philanthropy and a wish to make things better. You don't need a lot of money to start. And you don't have to have a lawyer and professional accountant to write up a contract (although we recommend utilizing your professional advisors, if available, to help you achieve your overall objectives). All you need is five minutes to fill out a donor interest form (which will help us develop a custom fund agreement that best suits your charitable and financial goals), and a passion you wish to explore. We will help you do the rest.
